UN3480 / UN3481
Dangerous goodsLithium ion batteries
Lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods with their own strict rules, especially by air.
In practice
UN3480 is batteries alone; UN3481 is batteries packed with or contained in equipment (UN3090 and UN3091 for lithium metal). Batteries alone are cargo aircraft only and limited to 30% state of charge by air. Even small quantities need the lithium battery mark. Sea shipments need a DGD unless within Section II limits.
Seen in the wild
Power banks are UN3480 Section IB, CAO only, max 10 kg per package.
