Certificate of Origin

A document certifying which country the goods were made in.

In practice

Issued by a chamber of commerce or government body. Needed to claim preferential duty under a free trade agreement (for example ASEAN Form D or the RCEP certificate) or when the importing country requires proof of origin. In Singapore, ordinary and preferential COs are applied for through TradeNet.

Seen in the wild

Buyer needs Form D COO to claim ATIGA duty-free rate in Thailand.

Watch out

CO alone can also mean Container Operator in terminal systems. On a customs email, CO is the certificate.
