DEM

Charges & surcharges

Demurrage

A daily charge for leaving a full container inside the port or terminal beyond the free time.

In practice

Counted from discharge (import) or from gate-in (export) until the box leaves the terminal. Rates escalate in tiers and can exceed the freight within a couple of weeks. Distinct from detention, which covers the box outside the port.

Seen in the wild

Free time 7 days at POD. DEM thereafter USD 100/day for days 8 to 14, USD 200/day after.

Watch out

Demurrage and detention are often billed together as D&D but they are separate clocks. A box can be out of the port (no demurrage) and still racking up detention.
