In practice
In a routing like CY/CY, the carrier's responsibility starts when the shipper delivers the laden container to the origin CY and ends when the consignee collects it from the destination CY. Everything before and after is the merchant's haulage.

Terms CY/CY. Empty pick-up at PSA depot, laden return to CY before cut-off.
Watch out
CY cut-off and SI cut-off are different deadlines. Missing either rolls the box.
