Customs duty

A tax charged by a country on goods imported into it, based on the goods' classification and value.

In practice

Singapore charges duty only on four categories: liquor, tobacco, motor vehicles, and petroleum products. Most other countries charge duty on a wide range of goods. Free trade agreements reduce or remove duty if the goods qualify with a preferential certificate of origin.
