Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit

The standard unit for counting container capacity, based on a 20-foot container.

In practice

A 40' container is 2 TEU. Vessel capacity, port throughput, and carrier volumes are all quoted in TEU. Rate sheets sometimes quote per TEU even when most boxes are 40'.

The vessel carries 18,000 TEU. PSA handled 39 million TEU last year.
